Ava loves working at the local horse stable. She grooms and washes horses and cleans up stalls. Diamond is an Arabian horse that no one wants to ride because she is too old. Ava decides to take care of Diamond, spending extra time to warm her up before easy trail rides. The other riders don't understand why Ava would waste her time with such a slow, old horse. But when the stable holds its annual trail race, Ava signs up Diamond. Is Diamond too old to win?

With Stablemates, every horse has a story!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carrie Hane Hung
Ava helps Ann, the owner of River Run Ranch. In exchange for cleaning the stables and caring for the horses at the ranch, Ava receives riding lessons. An Arabian horse named Diamond arrives; her original owner gave Ann the horse to use for riding lessons. At Ann's request, Ava tries riding Diamond, who follows commands well. Although Diamond is a wonderful horse to learn to ride on, the other students do not want to ride an old horse. Ava trains with Diamond so that Diamond may stay at the ranch. Ann enters the students in trail class in a horse show where the rider and horse must complete an obstacle course. Ava and Diamond prepare and train for the show. Color illustrations provide moderate support for the text. The plot is simple and moves along quickly. After the story, there is a short list of facts about Arabian horses; readers will find some additional information about horses within the story. This book is part of the "Stablemates" series which features stories with horses. The target audience for the books is young girls who love horses. Reviewer: Carrie Hane Hung

Actually a wonderful story with a lot of realism when it comes to horses.
