Overview

Cole Sage, a once brilliant journalist, has just about reached rock bottom. Haunted by the longing for the woman he lost, Cole is jarred to a crossroads when an elderly woman shoots and kills a hostage negotiator in front of him.
A while later, Cole is stunned to receive a one line cry for help from his one great love. He is face to face with his past and an uncertain future as he tries to find her estranged daughter.
The path to keeping his word is blocked at every turn by the husband who has abandoned her, his shady real estate deals, violent con men, street thugs and the lure of a fortune in diamonds that bring them all together.
The anger, sorrow, and crippling guilt of twenty years fires Cole’s drive to keep a promise, that in the end, will heal and return the soul to the great journalist.
Beaten, bloody but determined, Cole Sage conquers greed and hatred with a strength that only love and a will as hard as diamond can achieve.

    What a writer!

This was a first time reading for me by this author, but I do not plan for it to be my last. The story is so well written, felt as if I was experiencing everything each character was feeling or going thru. It is such a wonderful story, heart-wrenching... liked the way the author shared God's love and grace with his readers.

I read the reviews before starting to read this book. Wanted to get some kind of an idea of what to expect from this author. Reviews are good, descriptions seemed alot like only his family wrote the reviews... but upon finishing the book, I realized that the reviews were right... it is an excellent novel by a wonderful author who has a distinct love of the English language.

Cole Sage is a grand main character. A reporter by trade, it should be simple to understand that he would think like one... and he does. HIs thoughts are vast and are totally human in so many ways... but the author has made sure that Cole's words never get excessive or hum-drum.

I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys reading a well written story. And for those that take my recommendation... enjoy!!!!

    Five stars

I do not give five star ratings often. This book has a lot of adult themes. It is not chick lit, yet is a book woman can sink their teeth into. It has enough substance and action, men can enjoy it also. It is a rather sad novel, which makes the reader think about the important things in life. I wish the ending could have been different, but if it had been, the novel would have been ruined. A woman has ALS and hires a PI to find her daughter, so she can tell her daughter goodbye. There is much more to the novel, this is just one thread. A little over 300 pages. Ages 18 and up.

    I read 7 chapters

And just couldn't get into the story. Maxwell's writing is reminescent of Garrison Keillor stories. And not in a good way.

The plot seemed interesting ... 40 something yr old guy, newspaper writer bored with his job and desperately searching for a good story to write. Past love interest, now very ill with ALS, needs his help.

But with every step forward moving the tale along, is ten steps back with infill. Boring.

    Good story

The story itself was very good if you could ignore the crude words.

    A Diamond of a read

Cole is the hero you want to win because he is fighting for the love of his life. Maxwell has created a "dont want to put down until your finished" novel. You want a doctor when your hurt, you want Cole when you need answers and justice.
