Children's Literature - Naomi Milliner
On July 1st, 1961, Lady Diana Spencer was born to distant relatives of the royal family; twenty years later, she married the heir to the British throne. Her traits which won the hearts of people all over the world—compassion, caring, and warmth—were in evidence early on in Diana's nurturing of her numerous pets and a younger brother. She loved to dance, but grew too tall to be a ballerina; she cherished family, yet both her parents' marriage and her own ended in divorce. Although her family was well-to-do, Diana chose to earn her own way by being a nanny, waitress, and even maid before becoming a Kindergarten teacher. She first met Charles (13 years her senior) when she was only sixteen. Millions of people witness her amazing transformation from "Shy Di" to the stunning, poised young woman so many chose to emulate. As Princess Diana, she had cooks, butlers, drivers, everything but privacy and freedom. Though her fairytale marriage fell apart, Diana's love for her children was endless, as was her influence on them: her legendary charity work lives on through their efforts. For today's readers, this is an adequate introduction. Photographs are plentiful and telling: the glowing bride-to-be, the unhappy wife 10 years later, the woman who comforted AIDS victims and braved land mines. Unfortunately, the abundance and quality of pictures fails to compensate for the dearth of anecdotes and first-person quotes, and overall, the book is not deserving of one of the most admired and unforgettable women of our time.
