Meet the Author

Jeff Kinney
Jeff Kinney
Jeff Kinney is an online game developer and designer and is the author of the New York Times bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. He spent his childhood in the Washington, D.C., area and moved to New England in 1995.

Biography

All his life, Jeff Kinney wanted to be a cartoonist. As a student at the University of Maryland in the 1990s, he published his comic strip "Igdoof" in the college newspaper, but he soon discovered that succeeding in the real world as a syndicated cartoonist is no easy task. So, after school, he supported himself as a newspaper designer and computer programmer, while working out ideas for a children's book that combined cartoons with conventional storytelling.

Once he conceived the concept for Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Kinney devoted nearly six years to developing the storyline and artwork. Fashioned as a journal with appealing, expressive stick figure drawings on every page, Diary is narrated in the pitch-perfect (and hilariously deadpan) voice of a not-always-likeable but totally believable tweener named Greg Heffley. Poised to make the painful transition from elementary to middle school, Greg struggles with the usual preteen angst: bullies and cliques, annoying siblings and clueless parents, faithful friends and cute, unattainable girls.

Although Kinney never intended to publish his book online, when the opportunity arose to serialize Greg's adventures on Funbrain.com, he knew he'd found the perfect way to reach his target audience. In 2004, the comic strip began appearing in daily installments on the website. The feature was a huge hit, attracting thousands of hits a day. Moreover, the online version paved the way to Kinney's five-book deal with the publisher Harry N. Abrams.

Armed with fresh, new story lines, Kinney launched the print sequence in 2007. From the very first installment, entitled simply Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the series was a success -- especially with reluctant readers who found the diary-with-doodles format far more accessible than conventional books. Greg, with his hilarious antics, backfiring schemes, and totally unfiltered thoughts (his mom has agreed not to read what he writes!), has struck a responsive chord -- both with kids who identify with his growing pains and with grownups who vividly recall their own.

Good To Know

  • Jeff Kinney claims that he writes for kids because he believes the most interesting and funniest stories come from people's childhoods.

  • In an interview with familyeducation.com, Kinney was asked which he liked more: writing or drawing cartoons. He answered this way: " Both writing and drawing are a struggle for me. I am cursed with being a very slow illustrator, and this book requires at least 1,000 illustrations. So sometimes, the joy of illustrating is a bit diminished by the amount of time that illustrating takes. What I enjoy is seeing the words and illustrations come together on the page."

  • Kinney knew he'd made the grade when Diary of a Wimpy Kid was chosen to appear as a plot point on the popular Disney-produced preteen series Wizards of Waverly Place.

  • Kinney deliberately avoids putting pop culture references into his stories because he wants them to have a timeless feel. He hopes readers will be able to pick his books up 20 years from now and still be able to relate to themes.

      Awesome books!

My 8 year old has been a bit behind in reading and often found reading challenging and difficult. I took him to Barnes and Noble and we purchased the Yellow book in this series and he absolutely loved it! He read the full book in 2 days!!!! I was astonished! He had never, never wanted to read a book with 200 pages before and this one he simply could not put down!! Thank you and trust you me after this he will have more!! I highly recommend this book to your reluctant reader because mine loves it!

      Great set for boys.

My son who hates to read, loves these books. He wore out the school copies of the first two books... I purchased the next two in the set for him and decided just recently to replace those with this 4 edition set.
It is great to see a child excited about new books. If you have a child who does not enjoy reading, try these books. It was the spark to get my son reading again and may work for you too!

      Grandson Liked Them ALL

Great Set. Grandson liked them all. The fact that he has read all of them speaks for its self. They just seem to appeal to a young person.

      Best books I ever read.

The first book was better than the movie. All of these books have classic comedy of an average middleschool student stuck in a place which is all about surviving. He holds his head up high when it comes to his fantasy. The book also tells the probloms of his childhood.

      Funny Reading

Diary of a wimpy kid: The last straw was an amazing book to read. I would reccommend this book to a friend for many reasons. This book was absolutely hillarious. This book might even be the bestseller fiction book of 2009! What i liked about this book is that it was very funny.I also like the whole story to the tittle "the last straw" which is basically Greg Heffley needing to "man" up. This book was the best one of the series so far that I have read. I look forward to ready the rest of this amazing series.

      Funny!

My children found this book absolutely hilarious! I bought the 4 book set, it was cheaper then buying them individually, and read them as bed time stories. The characters were very realistic and impressionable. A great read!

A Must-Read for children of all ages!

After seeing the movie my daughters (ages 10 and 8) asked me to get them the entire collection. Even though they had each read book one in the series and the other volumes were available at our local library, there is something special about owning the book yourself. And that is even more special for a child. So I went onto the website for Barnes & Noble and searched for the set. To no surprise it was readily in stock. But to my surprise, there was a 40% discount for purchasing the set.

It is difficult to describe how a child's face lights up not just when they receive a gift, but when they receive a gift they truly want. You know this will be a remembrance through their entire lives. And a book is a gift that keeps on giving as you read it again and again because it becomes one of your favorites. And a book gives again when you pass it on to someone else to read.

My ten year old started on the set first. She devoured book one and immediately passed it on to her younger sister (pre-agreed reading order to avoid arguments). As my eight year old began to read book one my ten year old was reading through book two.

Sunday mornings before Sunday School are usually computer time for my daughters. But not the Sunday immediately follow their receiving the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book set. As usual my daughter were awake about an hour before I was. I was truly shocked to see both girls quietly in the living room each reading their respective books.

The stories are well written and the illustrations are appropriate for the story line. Anyone with a child ages six and up should encourage their child to read the Diary of a Wimpy Kind series.

      Wimpy Kids

I purchased these for my grandson. He love the books read them all and is re-reading them again. This is great as he does only the reading he usually has to. I would recommend them to anyone looking for something a young person would read. They got his attention. I just purchased the Wimpy Kids- Movie book which I just gave him. He plans to start reading this one tomorrow.

My Kids also Love the Book SCHMALTZY (Learn 100 New Vocabulary Words in One Reading)

Schmaltzy's book contains new vocabulary words before every chapter and the words are color-coded in each chapter. Kids learn more than 100 new vocabulary words in an instant. Schmaltzy is that You-Tube sensation, the world famous piano playing cat.

The Smartgrades School Notebooks are also fabulous because they contain the new learning technology, ACANDY Processing Tools.
