Peach Friedman, a spokesperson for the National Eating Disorders Association, is a personal fitness trainer and yoga teacher who works with people recovering from eating disorders. As a young Southern woman in her senior year of college, Peach Friedman set out to beat the blues—and a break-up with her boyfriend—by beating herself into shape. Running ten miles a day and taking in as little as 800 calories, she forbade herself from indulging in the sensual pleasure of food and worked her body to exhaustion to avoid dealing with her emotional pain.

She fell from 146 to 100 pounds in three months.

Friedman suffered from exercise bulimia—a compulsion to purge calories through excessive exercise, and a rapidly growing eating disorder that affects some 400,000 American women. Having lost all memory of the sexy, curvaceous woman she once knew, Friedman found herself at serious risk of cardiac arrest.

    It was nightfall...

    ... and the camp was quiet. A small cat, merely an apprentice, crept in. Her gray tabby and white pelt was muddy and dull, and her green eyes were shaded with pain and grief. A dark brown she-kit crawled at her side, her foreleg trailing on the dirt as she tried to keep up. "Willowpaw," the kit whined to the apprentice, "im hungry. I want milk." "Hush Briarkit!" Willowpaw hissed, "i dont have any!" The kit whimpered, and tried to climb on Willowpaw's back, but fell to the ground. Willowpaw stopped. Her belly convulsed. Briarkits eyes widened. "Are they coming, mother?" She asked Willowpaw. "Y...yes!" Willowpaw whispered, thinking of the kits that were soon to be born. All of the others from her first litter were dead... all except Briarkit. And now more were to come.
