Meet the Author

María Moliner nació en Paniza, provincia de Zaragoza, el 30 de marzo de 1900. Su padre, Enrique Moliner, ejerció su profesión como médico rural hasta que se trasladó a América como médico de barco. Fue entonces cuando la familia Moliner se desplazó a Madrid.

Esta etapa de su vida fue muy importante. Mantuvo relaciones con la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, que tiempo después se harían más estrechas.

En 1918 terminó el Bachiller en el Instituto General y Técnico de Zaragoza e ingresó en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad zaragozana, convirtiéndose así en una de las pocas mujeres universitarias de principios de siglo. Obtuvo su licenciatura en Historia con honores en 1921, a pesar de que su vocación se inclinaba más hacia el campo de la lingüística.

En 1922 ingresó en el Cuerpo Facultativo de Archiveros, Bibliotecarios y Arqueólogos donde trabajó hasta su jubilación en 1970. Ejerció en Simancas, Valencia, Murcia y en la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Industriales de Madrid.

En 1925 contrajo matrimonio con Fernando Ramón y Ferrando, que sería catedrático de Física de la Universidad de Valencia, con quien tuvo cuatro hijos: Enrique, Fernando, Carmen y Pedro. Durante la época en la que residió en Valencia, doña María simultaneó sus labores domésticas con sus obligaciones profesionales en el ámbito de las actividades culturales desarrolladas por la Segunda República, como directora de la Biblioteca de la Universidad de Valencia y del proyecto de las Bibliotecas Populares.

Después de la Guerra Civil, el traslado de su marido a la Universidad de Salamanca determinó que la familia se instalase definitivamente en Madrid, donde creían que podrían ofrecer mejores oportunidades educativas y profesionales a sus hijos. En esta etapa de su vida es cuando doña María trabaja en la Biblioteca de la Escuela de Ingenieros Industriales y comienza, en 1952, la elaboración de su diccionario.
