Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
I guess it is showing my age, but I certainly remember learning to read with Dick, Jane, Sally and Spot. It was a great accomplishment in first grade to be able to read one of those books aloud in my reading circle and to move myself up from the lowest non-reading level to the top group (turned out I needed glasses). These books have been reissued for another generation of beginning readers. It starts out very simply with a few words and those same words repeated several times on a page. Sally is pulling her little red wagon and has a few mishaps, Jane tries out her roller skates and they all have fun building very simple boats with Dad. If it were not for the outfits—dresses for the girls it would not be that different an experience for many kids and of course there is a complete absence of TVs and computers as a form of entertainment. There is still a sense of accomplishment moving from the very simple early text to the more complex pages at the end with multiple sentences on a page. Part of the "Penguin Young Readers" series, this is a Level 1 book for emergent readers. It is identified as Guided Reading Level "D" and uses simple vocabulary, picture clues and familiar themes and ideas. The opening page contains a note to parents and educators about the series and tips for making best use of the book. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

    Dick & Jane series

This is part of the old Dick & Jane series of early readers. I think it is a good way to help children learn to read. Often lamented as too simple and repetitive they have proven remarkably resilent and timely ways to introduce words and sounds.
This is a good book for parents and grandparents to use.

    Hooray for Dick and Jane

I was thrilled to find these books that I learned to read with. They have made learning to read such a positive experience for my daughter. Illustrations are fabulous and word repetition makes reading so much easier.
