Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Dick and Jane and other old friends return in new ways, in books for beginning readers. The paperback Read with Dick and Jane series presents repackaged editions of the vintage readers that generations of Americans grew up on-with their familiar large type, simple sentences and 1950s illustrations. Each book features six or seven stories that get progressively more challenging, with longer sentences and less repetition. In We Look, Sally tries to walk in her mother's shoes, Dick wears roller-skates to walk Spot ("Look, Jane./ Look, look./ See Dick") and Jane dresses up Puff the cat as a baby. The series also includes Something Funny; Jump and Run; Guess Who; Go Away, Spot; and Go, Go, Go. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
I guess it is showing my age, but I certainly remember learning to read with Dick, Jane, Sally and Spot. It was a great accomplishment in first grade to be able to read one of those books aloud in my reading circle and to move myself up from the lowest non-reading level to the top group (turned out I needed glasses). These books have been reissued in both paper and library binding for another generation of beginning readers. It starts out very simply with a few words and those same words repeated several times on a page. Puff and Sally are playing with a red balloon, Spot and Dick are having fun with a stick and the whole family gets involved in jumping rope, helping mother rescue clothes from the clothesline when a storm is approaching. If it were not for the outfits—dresses for the girls and mother and father's dated clothes, it would not be that different an experience for many kids, however there is a complete absence of TVs and computers as a form of entertainment (not all bad in this reviewer's opinion). There is still a sense of accomplishment moving from the very simple early text to the more complex pages at the end with multiple sentences on a page. Part of the "Read with Dick and Jane" series. 2003 (org. 1956), Grosset & Dunlap, Ages 5 to 7.

    Highly Recommended!!!

We purchased several of the books in this series for my son's 4th birthday. He had been working through online "Learn to Read" lessons but was still sounding out almost every word he read and was not very enthusiastic about doing them. WITHIN DAYS of getting these books he is already sight reading many of the words. What is even more important, is that he loves to read them! I highly recommend these books for anyone with young children that are learning to read!
