Dickie's Promise
COULD THIS HAPPEN IN AMERICA?

Baby Boomers have become victims of their perceived excess in a dystopian future. A new society of "Reformers" scapegoats this generation they derisively call "Busters," and legislate measures to limit resources spent on caring for them.

Daphne "Dickie" Dickerson, like other childless Busters, is without a family to protect her and finds herself placed in the Adopt a Grandparent program and then Serenity Acres, a government-sponsored refugee camp. When Dickie discovers the horrifying true purpose of the camp, she becomes determined to escape with her friends and head for the Canadian border.

Dickie's Promise is a relevant, cautionary tale. Dickie is an unlikely protagonist and reluctant hero; a Baby Bomer who spent years, "just living her life". Through encounters with challenging characters and events, we see her prodded into keeping a promise she made long ago and emerging as a leader in saving other Busters. With elements reminiscent of The Handmaid's Tale and 1984, Dickie's Promise is a timely look at scapegoating taken to its political extremes. From the start, it will have you asking, "Could this really happen in America?" By the end, you may answer, "Yes! Yes, it could."

About the Author

Nina Joyner is a first-time author with a social work/human services background and a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Urban Policy. Dickie’s Promise draws on her professional and academic experiences and research on conflict analysis and public policy. Some of the references to the Adopt a Grandparent program draw from her experiences in the child welfare system.

Dickie’s Promise was sparked by the intense political debates in previous presidential debates and accelerated social polarization. Dickie’s Promise was born listening to CNN and Fox political commentary and observing how easily fear is politically manipulated. She works in the human services field and lives Virginia Beach, VA.
