Ademas de los multiples paralelismos y semejanzas entre el nacionalsocialismo y el comunismo estalinista -el culto enfermizo al lider, las promesas de un futuro utopico, el terror como arma politica o la absoluta negacion de las libertades y derechos individuales-, Richard Overy analiza las indudables diferencias entre los dos sistemas, como el enfasis que Hitler puso en el nacionalismo y en el concepto de raza, y Stalin en la lucha proletaria contra la burguesia.
