Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greg M. Romaneck
For people living in democratic societies, the notion that human beings would appear willing to sacrifice freedom in the name of dictatorial practices seems counter intuitive. Yet, time and again in human history, issues of want, need, and fear have led people to accept, or even embrace, dictatorial governance. One need only look back to the terrible effects of the Great Depression and how those desperate days directly led to the rise of dictators such as Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco to confirm that people will sacrifice freedom for security. In more modern times, the recent Arab Spring and the fall of the Soviet Bloc would be counter examples of people rising up against dictatorial oppression in the pursuit of freedom. In this particular work readers are provided background information about the rise of dictators, dictatorial governance practices, the fall of tyrants, and how oppressive regimes affect the people who live under them. As is the case with other books in this informative, illustrated "Systems of Government" series, Dictatorship uses a variety of methods to teach its cardinal lessons. The historical narrative is concise and yet thorough. Additionally, periodic text box insertions of thoughtful questions, vignettes, and voices from the past all amplify the message of the text. This approach yields positive results in the form of a fine introduction to a form of government that persists and degrades at the same time. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck
