Written for librarians, teachers, and researchers, this is the second five-year supplement to the authors' Dictionary of American Children's Fiction, 1960-1984 (Greenwood, 1986). Its 567 entries cover 189 award-winning children's books by 136 authors published from 1990 to 1994. Included are concise critical reviews of novels, biographical profiles of authors, and descriptions of memorable characters. An appendix lists books by the awards they have won, and an extensive index allows complete access to the wealth of material contained within this reference work.

Included are alphabetically arranged entries for those works that critics have singled out to receive awards or have placed on citation lists during the five years covered by the volume. The reference also contains biographical entries for leading authors of children's fiction, with entries focusing on how the author's life relates to children's literature and to particular works in this dictionary. The volume provides a list of awards, along with an appendix classifying individual works by the awards they have won. An extensive index provides full access to the wealth of information in this book.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Chris Crowe
This reference work is the second in a series of five-year updates to the authors' previous two volumes on American fiction for children, from 1859-1985. It contains more than five hundred entries, most in the categories of author, title, and character, on more than 180 books that received awards from 1990 to 1994. The authors culled their selections from twenty children's book award sources, from the Jane Addams Peace Association Children's Book Award to the Western Heritage Award. Picture books are not included. This is an impressive reference work. Book entries contain a detailed summary and critical review of the text. Author entries are brief but supply standard biographical information about the writers, including a listing of other books they have written. The character entries provide critical and succinct characterization of important characters and place them within the context of the work as a whole. All the entries are arranged alphabetically, dictionary style. An appendix listing featured books by award categories and a very detailed index conclude the volume. The authors' objective, critical insight into each work, sets this apart from standard plot-summary reference guides. The writing is clear and direct, but the tone is academic and literary, so this work will likely appeal more to writers, librarians, and teachers than to pre-college students. It is a welcome and useful critical guide to quality fiction for young readers. Index. Appendix.
The main part of the volume contains alphabetically arranged explanatory notes on 567 entries including titles, authors, characters, settings, and other elements from 189 books that have been singled out for awards or placed on citation lists during this period. Included are biographical entries for many authors of children's fiction. The volume also includes a list of awards along with an appendix classifying individual works by the awards they have won.
