The Dictionary of Classical Mythology

by Pierre Grimal

The dictionary will be an essential companion to the study of Western literature and art, a significant part of which has always been concerned with the ancient myths and legends as a source of both subject- matter and allusion. But above all this book is a fascinating and readable guide to the rich and diverse legends and mythologies of the classical world.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
There has been nothing in English like Grimal's authoritative dictionary of Greek and Roman mythological figures. Now translated, this text will be an essential source for specialists and general readers alike. Alphabetized, biographical entries are comprehensive, careful to indicate historical and literary context, free from ideology, and readable. Each entry provides extremely useful bibliographic references to ancient literature. Forty genealogical tables, two maps, cross-references, full index, and illustrations further enhance the utility of this invaluable, and sorely needed, source. Stephen Scully, Classical Studies Dept., Boston Univ.
From the Publisher
"This substantial and attractive book should be warmly welcomed . . . a work at once authoritative and complete with an impressive standard of accuracy: the generous cross-referencing given makes browsing an almost mandatory pleasure, and it will indeed be a learned reader who does not find something he did not previously know on almost every page." Times Literary Supplement

"There has been nothing in English like Grimal's authoritative dictionary... this text will be an essential source for specialists and general readers alike... invaluable and sorely needed." Library Journal
