The book includes informative entries on every country in the world, with maps and historical summaries, and has biographical profiles of major historical figures, political and military leaders, and leading thinkers who influenced events. Readers will find information on international organizations, treaties, religious and political movements, as well as key incidents, places, and battles. The new edition has been fully revised and updated, and boasts a wealth of new material, including extended coverage of historical context in the country entries, new and expanded biographical entries on figures such as Angela Merkel and President Lula of Brazil, web links that can be accessed via a special companion website (regularly updated to ensure accurate information), and useful tables including lists of office-holders for countries and organizations and winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. In sum, this is a comprehensive reference work that will prove invaluable to a range of readers from students of history, politics, and international relations, to anyone with an interest in the modern world.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"A wonderful update to this wide-ranging dictionary of contemporary world history.... Its 2500-plus entries are clear and concise and cover everything"--Library Journal

Review from previous edition:" Palmowski has done a fine job"--Journal of World History

"Concise, current information...highly recommended"--Choice

Library Journal

Palmowski (director, Ctr. for Twentieth-Century Studies, King's Coll., Univ. of London) provides a wonderful update to this wide-ranging dictionary of contemporary world history, now covering events up to August 4, 2007. Its 2500-plus entries are clear and concise and cover everything from world leaders, both past and present, to revised information on all the world's nations. Many articles contain cross-references, which are identified within an article through the use of an asterisk. This is the type of reference book patrons would use to check a fact about a nation or to find background information at the start of a research project. Web site information is provided for some topics, but web addresses are omitted because they change frequently. The list of subject entries ranges from Aaland Islands-"6500 islands in the Gulf of Bothnia between Finland and Sweden"-to Zog I-"the King of Albania from 1928 to 1939." The volume concludes with maps of the former empires of Europe, and country maps are found throughout the text, as are lists on such varied topics as decolonization during the 20th century and the viceroys and prime ministers of India.
