Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This ambitious reference provides short introductions to nearly 4000 individuals important to Jewish history and culture. Rabbi Cohn-Sherbok (Jewish theology, Univ. of Wales, Lampeter; Judaism: History, Belief, and Practice) meticulously and concisely documents the key contributions of Jewish writers, scientists, rabbis, philosophers, philanthropists, entertainers, intellectuals, and biblical personages, from the well known (e.g., Aaron, brother of Moses) to the more obscure (e.g., Austrian writer Stephan Zweig). Relevant maps of Israel and Europe during key periods in Jewish history precede specific dictionary entries. There is also a useful chronology and an impressively comprehensive, albeit brief, historical background essay following the history of the Jews from the ancient world to the end of the 20th century. The short profiles reflect the diversity and range of Jewish contributions to every aspect of culture and civilization. While some entries are only a sentence long, all provide the year of birth and death, country of origin, and Jewish contribution. It is difficult to determine why the 16th-century Italian adventurer David Reuveni (who claimed to be the son of King Solomon) gets a nearly 150-word entry, while there is no entry at all for a prominent Jewish politician like New York's Ed Koch, once mayor of the city claiming the largest Jewish community in the world. Also, there are some idiosyncratic slips, such as the identification of literary critic Lionel Trilling as "Leopold." Bottom Line Despite these cavils, this is an important and very useful reference text for the general reader and is highly recommended for public and academic libraries.-Herbert E. Shapiro, Empire State Coll., SUNY at Rochester Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
