Dictionary of Roman Religion

Overview

Long overshadowed by Greek mythology or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due and set in its full context as no other reference source has done before. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods, Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems.

From the Celtic god Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion contains more than 1,400 entries, covering topics such as festivals, sacrifices, temples, burial rites, deities and spirits, and historical religious events. The different religions are also covered: Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, which were all part of the Roman religious world. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography.
Complete with illustrations and helpful cross-references, this dictionary is both comprehensive and essential for students and researchers. For those interested in ancient religions, myths and legends, Roman society, and classical studies, this dictionary is a welcome and novel edition to the vast library on ancient Roman life.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
YAThis reference tool fills an important need for students of world studies, mythology, antiquities, Latin, and particularly the Roman Empire. The Adkinses point out that the Romans incorporated deities from many cultures in addition to those of Greece and created many of their own. This volume covers them A-Z, as well as topics such as spirits, places, and buildings. It also contains entries referring to religions that existed within the Roman world, such as Judaism, Christianity, and Druidism. Appropriate bold facing and italics draw attention to the most important information, and drawings and photographs elucidate topics. Extensive cross-references to other entries and to books in the extensive bibliography enable students to delve as deeply into the subject as desired. The index is extremely detailed. The readable text and inviting layout make this an excellent choice for high school libraries.Cynthia Rieben, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA
Booknews
Breaking with the long tradition of presenting classical Roman mythology as a reworked and diluted version of its Greek counterpart, offers entries ranging from short definitions to short essays on both the primitive, native aspects and the cosmopolitan fertility of mythology incorporated from Judaism, Druidism, Mithraism, and other cultures. Includes deities and their kin, festivals, events, writers, places and buildings, cult objects, burial rites, and other aspects. Modestly illustrated in black and white. Well cross-referenced, and most entries are referenced to the bibliography. Includes a glossary without pronunciation. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
