Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Leifer, a London School of Economics professor and widely published expert in the political affairs and history of Southeast Asia, has compiled a book that introduces the reader to an area of potential economic clout in any future world order. Ten short essays provide adequate background information on each country. The main portion of the book features nearly 400 fairly short entries in alphabetical sequence. Entries, which include cross references, span biographies (these constitute nearly 40 percent of the entries), treaties, major events, political parties, and indigenous peoples. While most entries are a half-page or less, several topics are given more space, e.g., Vietnam War and Lee Kuan Yew. Coverage is most extensive for Malaysia and Indonesia, with Brunei and Laos receiving the least. While Lawrence Ziring's Asian Political Dictionary (ABC-CLIO, 1985) and books in Scarecrow Press's "Asian Historical Dictionaries" series present some of the same information, Leifer's work is decidedly more up to date and focused on contemporary politics. Highly recommended for all academic and larger public libraries.-Stephen W. Green, Auraria Lib., Denver
Booknews
Focusing on the ten countries of southeast Asia during the post- war, post-colonial period, 350 articles provide succinct information about important people, organizations, issues, and events. The entries are presented alphabetically, and indexed by country. Well cross-referenced. A reference for journalists, students, diplomats, business people, and anyone interested in the region.
