Overview

Large numbers of atheists, humanists, and conspiracy theorists are raising one of the most pressing questions in the history of religion: "Did Jesus exist at all?" Was he invented out of whole cloth for nefarious purposes by those seeking to control the masses? Or was Jesus such a shadowy figure—far removed from any credible historical evidence—that he bears no meaningful resemblance to the person described in the Bible?

In Did Jesus Exist? historian and Bible expert Bart Ehrman confronts these questions, vigorously defends the historicity of Jesus, and provides a compelling portrait of the man from Nazareth. The Jesus you discover here may not be the Jesus you had hoped to meet—but he did exist, whether we like it or not.

Editorial Reviews

Christian Science Monitor
“His newest book has turned some of his perennial critics into fans, at least temporarily. In Did Jesus Exist?: The Historical Argument for Jesus of Nazareth, Ehrman decimates the persistent arguments of those who not only deny the divinity of Jesus but insist that no such man ever even existed.”

Ehrman is the man. For far too long mythicists from all walks of life with no academic credentials have been claiming that Jesus was a myth. Ehrman calls there bluff, reviews their claims, and single-handedly dissects their b.s. Ehrman's evidence is spot on and he makes the mythicists look like utter fools. Must read for all believers and non-believers. Both groups will find a very objective scholarly position without the religious or atheist bias.

This work shows compelling evidence that there really was a man named Jesus. People who are believers will be put off that this does not support the contention that he was god incarnate it does convince that there was a man named Jesus.

Although no historical argument can ever be 100% proof for the historicity of an ancient figure, Ehrman's argument is persuasive and explains well why he has concluded that Jesus did exist as an historical figure. He provides a wealth of references, including books that argue against the existence of Jesus. For anyone interested in whether Jesus existed, I think this book is a must read, regardless of your own belief on the topic.

This is a TRULY AWESOME, straight forward & blatantly honest REVELATION; a must read by every professing Christian & fellow human beings on the Planet regardless of his/her particular religious affiliation or personal beliefs! I say this as one raised within the Protestant Christian Episcopalian religious tradition! I have already recommended Dr. Ehrman's REVELATION to countless family members, friends & acquaintances & will be purchasing additional copies for distribution in keeping with the precept that "Sharing Is Caring"!

Intriging ideas, but poorly written. There are lots of worthwhile needles, but it's a big haystack.

Bart should now call it quits. He has done enough writing about Jesus and his followers. He has now run out of Christianity. He can now concentrate on his class at the UNC. Enough of him and his books.
