Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Television anchor Wills began pursuing her family history in the hope of settling issues about her long-dead father and to better understand her family's past. Instead, she traced her line directly to Sandy Wills, a Civil War veteran whose bravery was passed down to Sandy's descendents, along with a tenacity that has unfortunately been matched by tragedy. Cheryl's father Clarence, for instance, wrestled for years with demons before finally dying in a motorcycle crash, an event that greatly impacted all his children. In exploring her ancestry and her father's death, Wills attempts to draw a clear narrative path through America's history of slavery and racism and the African-American struggle for success. However, she also jumps from Sandy Wills to Clarence Wills and back again, repeating herself, meandering, and offering often-tangential commentary (speculating on how her immediate family would feel about Sandy's story, for instance). Wills has indeed uncovered an interesting family tale, but has yet to find the best way to tell it. (Jan.)

    highly recommended.

Die free is a must to read as Cheryl Wills documents the facts behind slavery upon learning of Sandy wills, her great great great grandfather.Sandy not only broke away from barbaric slavery and all its conditions while he was kept government impossed illiterate, he marched right into the army, United States Colored Troops to fight for freedom in 1863, the Civil War. This book teachers you what the history books do not. The pages flow with grace as the writer bounces back and forth from Sandy to the goings on in the Wills family. The church times is a must to read. It clearly shows the strong belief in God as Grampa Fred preaches and Clarence, Cheryls dad and her Uncle Van play their quitars to the flowing "ivory keys" of Grandma Opal. It writes of the devoted and unconditional love of a little girl towards her greatly accomplished father and the tragedy to come. Die Free is indeed a page turner and my life has not been the same upon reading. May we all be free.
