Angelos, ihn für ihre Interessen instrumentalisieren. Um Alexios IV. von Alexios III. und Alexios V. zu unterscheiden, wird er hier auch bevor er Kaiser wird mit dieser Nummerierung benannt. Die Kreuzzugsforschung spricht Alexios nur eine Nebenrolle zu. Die Chronisten vermitteln ein deutliches Bild von ihm, sodass es keine Diskussionen gibt. BRADFORD fasst die Bedeutung Alexios' in den Chroniken gut in einem Satz zusammen: „Wenn er auch als Mensch völlig unbedeutend war, so sollte doch der Ehrgeiz dieses Mannes zu einer grenzenlosen Tragödie führen".
