VOYA - Liz Sundermann
In this installment of the Southern Beauty Shop Mysteries, hairstylist-cum-sleuth, Grace Terhune, solves a mystery, weathers a hurricane, faces death threats, and learns about the history of her small town in Georgia. After agreeing to chaperone a high school ghost-hunting expedition, Grace gets wrapped up in solving the mysterious murder attempt that takes place while everyone is seemingly engaged in a prank. The deeper Grace digs, the more potential suspects she discovers: everyone from the fallen youth's best friend to a researcher with a major pharmaceutical company are on the list. As a hurricane approaches, a meddling TV ghost-whisperer interferes, and more attempts are made on the victim's life, Grace relies on her wits and her close ties at the beauty shop to figure out who the would-be murderer is before it is too late. This is an entertaining, cozy mystery that will be enjoyed by teens who like the genre. Although the protagonist is an adult, she is youthful and energetic, and much of the action centers around high school students. The characters are well-drawn and the town makes an intriguing setting. In mysteries with an abundance of suspects, the actual criminal is sometimes pulled in too abruptly. Lila Dare does not make this mistake; this reviewer did not guess the culprit, but there were logical clues throughout. Reading the earlier books in the series is not necessary, but teens who like this one are sure to ask for them. Reviewer: Liz Sundermann
