Overview

Die Problematik des Überlieferungszufalls bestimmt die ägyptologische Geschichtsschreibung. Deshalb wird für die spezifischen Bedingungen der Ägyptologie die Methode einer „fragmentarischen dichten Beschreibung“ entwickelt und zugleich auf eine spezifische Region Ägyptens angewendet. Von dieser lokalen Perspektive aus wird ein neues Verständnis der Kultur im ausgehenden 3. Jt. v.Chr. erarbeitet. Dieser Zugang erschließt Konzeptionalisierungen der Landschaft, der Sozio-Ökonomie, der Mentalitäten und Diskurse.
Zwar entsteht kein geschlossenes Bild der Gebeleiner Region, und die Männer, Frauen und Kinder bleiben für unseren Blick Schatten ihrer bunten Lebenswirklichkeit. Trotzdem können wir so unsere Quellen besser verstehen und in geistes-, wirtschafts- und sozialgeschichtliche Zusammenhänge stellen. Von lokaler Perspektive ausgehend erweitert die Arbeit unser Gesamtverständnis der traditionell unterschätzten „dunklen“ Zeit der Regionen. Diese umfassende Transformation der ägyptischen Gesellschaft in sozio-ökonomischer und mentalitätsgeschichtlicher Hinsicht erscheint in der genaueren Betrachtung bunt und widersprüchlich. In dieser Ära auch von Hungern und Kriegen wurden zugleich Elemente neuer Lebensweisen und Vorstellungen, Verschiebungen im Sozialgefüge und den Mentalitäten geprägt.
