Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 1998 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Geschichtstheorie, einseitig bedruckt, Note: 2,5, Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Historisches Institut), Veranstaltung: Die Entdeckung der Zukunft, 33 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Aurelius Augustinus, der Bischof von Hippo, war nicht nur ein Kirchenmann, sondern auch ein interessanter Philosoph, der auf der Basis seines Glaubens grundlegende Überlegungen angestellt hat. Diese Abhanndlung will sowohl den Menschen als auch seine Gedanken, besonders zum Zeitproblem, betrachten.
Dabei sollen im ersten Teil der Untersuchung insbesondere die philosophischen und theologischen Einflüsse im Lebenslauf des Bischofs von Hippo betrachtet werden. Vor allem die Beschäftigung mit Plotins Enneade III,7 (Über Zeit und Ewigkeit) kann als Grundlage für die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Zeitproblem im XI. Buch der Confessiones gesehen werden, wobei natürlich auch nicht vergessen werden darf, daß andere philosophisch-theologische Richtungen - so z. B. der Skeptizismus oder der Manichäismus - eine Rolle spielen.
Im zweiten Teil der Abhandlung soll das Zeitproblem selbst untersucht werden. Zum einen werden dabei die Worte Augustins selbst von Interesse sein, zum anderen werden die daraus resultierenden Fragestellungen nach einer Zukunftsvorstellung des Bischofs und nach dem Verhältnis vom freien Willen des Menschen und der Vorbestimmung in den Mittelpunkt der Arbeit rücken. Gerade bei der Untersuchung der Vorstellung der Zukunft bietet es sich an, vergleichend und ergänzend auch die Zukunftsvorstellung der Menschen der ausgehenden Antike und des Mittelalters zu betrachten, um herauszufinden, inwieweit Augustin als Wendepunkt in der Zeitvorstellung oder als in der Auffassung seiner Periode verhaftet zu sehen ist.
