Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Leatherback turtles come back as adults to the same beach where they were born to have their offspring. The mother turtle lays her eggs and covers them with sand and then heads back out to sea. The eggs are big and Diego's sister Alicia tells him that they are about the size of ping pong balls and that each clutch may contain a hundred or more eggs. The baby sea turtles are born when the full moon shines brightly on the sea—it is what attracts them toward the water. Other man-made lighting can be a danger and can end up leading the babies in the wrong direction. Diego helps rescue sea turtles who were distracted by the flashlights that the Bobo Brothers were using. He also makes sure that the beach is clear of debris, especially plastic bags, so that the sea creatures will not accidentally eat the bags. The closing page contains interesting facts about sea turtles, such as the importance of temperature in determining the sex of the newly hatched turtles, how fast they swim, and how many years they can live.
