Overview

From John Robbins, a new edition of the classic that awakened the conscience of a nation. Since the 1987 publication of Diet for a New America, beef consumption in the United States has fallen a remarkable 19%. While many forces are contributing to this dramatic shift in our habits, Diet for a New America is considered to be one of the most important. Diet for a New America is a startling examination of the food we currently buy and eat in the United States, and the astounding moral, economic, and emotional price we pay for it.
In Section I, John Robbins takes an extraordinary look at our dependence on animals for food and the inhumane conditions under which these animals are raised. It becomes clear that the price we pay for our eating habits is measured in the suffering of animals, a suffering so extreme and needless that it disrupts our very place in the web of life.

Section II challenges the belief that consuming meat is a requirement for health by pointing our the vastly increased rate of disease caused by pesticides, hormones, additives, and other chemicals now a routine part of our food production. The author shows us that the high health risk is unnecessary, and that the production, preparation, and consumption of food can once again be a healthy process.

In Section III, Robbins looks at the global implications of a meat-based diet and concludes that the consumption of the resources necessary to produce meat is a major factor in our ecological crisis.

Diet for a New America is the single most eloquent argument for a vegetarian lifestyle ever published. Eloquently, evocatively, and entertainingly written, it is a cant put down book guaranteed to amaze, infuriate, but ultimately educate and empower the reader. A pivotal book nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction in 1987.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This well-documented expose of America's ``factory farms'' should prompt even die-hard meat-and-potatoes lovers to reevaluate their diets. Asserting that ``we are ingesting nightmares for breakfast, lunch and dinner,'' Robbins, who is medical director of the California Institute for Health and Healing, details how livestock is raised under increasingly industrialized conditions by ``agribusiness oligopolies.'' Grazing and foraging have given way to debeaking, tail-docking, dehorning and castration, and treatment with pesticides, hormones, growth and appetite stimulants, tranquilizers and antibioticswhich, in turn, are assimilated by humans. The author correlates our ``protein obsessed'' society with a higher incidence of arteriosclerosis, osteoporosis, cancer and other degenerative diseases, as well as freakish occurrences like premature puberty from estrogen contamination. As Robbins debunks nutritional myths perpetuated by the powerful meat and dairy industries (indicting as well his family's Baskin-Robbins ice-cream empire), this is sure to prove controversial. This is an eye-opening book if you haven't done your homework about how food is produced in this country! The commercialization of meat production illustrates most clearly how taking control of our food supply (domesticating, breeding, and artificial feeding) has affected its nutritional content and our physical health. Today, as John Robbins points out, much of the cattle in the U.S. does not graze on green pastures and are not allowed to roam free, like portrayed on the product labels. Instead most live their lives on feeding lots confined to small areas and are fed grain. The grain is what gives steak the fatty, marble look. This drastically elevates the saturated fat and cholesterol content within the meat and dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc). Most cattle in the United States (unless certified organic) are injected with Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH), fed antibiotics, and then the feed lots are blanketed with insecticides which fall into the cattle's food and water and eventually become part of someone's dinner. The cattlemen found that when they inject BGH into a cow it produced between 15-25% more milk although it seriously damaged the animal's health and reproduction capacity. This injected hormone significantly increased their profit margin however this is terrible news for you and especially children. We note that kids today are physically maturing at an unusually earlier age now. I'm convinced based on widespread expert research there is an obvious and direct correlation between conventional food production, early physical maturation, and reproductive organ cancers. This would explain the fact that every industrialized country in the world, except for the US, has banned BGH! When the animal products mentioned above are ingested, you are also indirectly flooding your system with synthetic antibiotics. Bearing in mind that 90 percent of the bacteria in and around your body are beneficial and vital to your overall health, antibiotics are unable discriminate between good and bad bacteria. They kill everything! Vast quantities of certain antibiotics are routinely included in the diet of healthy farm animals because this practice has been shown to make animals grow faster. Experts have recently concluded this ultimately leads to an environment conducive to the evolution of antibiotic resistance. 'Diet for a New America' is required reading for all of my nutrition patients and I cannot recommend this book enough! - Dr. Matthew J. Loop (Author of 'Cracking the Cancer Code')

No more steaks...no more milk...no more eggs. John Robbins is fascinating man with a incredible list of books to his name. He has turned me into a vegan almost over night. My father, brother, girlfriend, aunt, and a cousin are all vegetarian now. I gave a copy of his book to them all and we all enjoy our tofu stir fry more than all you can eat steak. Giving up animal products was not only easy, but it was the best choice I have ever made. I love the food that I eat now more than the greasy fattening food I used to eat for over 25 years.

Excellent book for everyone and should be required reading esp. for youngsters since they are the future potential consumers. Given who is the writer, a prominent Baskin Robbbins ice-cream busniessman's son, this is a huge step for him and much sacrifice has made. Can't commend enough for the information in this valuable book and for the initiative the writer took undertaking this project. KUDOS ! This has really changed my outlook on food and my conscious dietary intake.

Robbins is without a doubt a very gifted and eloquent writer and enthusiastic activist for the benefit of all life on our beautiful planet. This book will enrage you, perplex you, motivate you and guide your heart to a more compassionate state. Anyone who can read this book in its entirety and not feel a compulsive need to heed Robbins's words and make definitive changes to their lifestyle is lacking a deep sense of respect for themselves, their environment and the future generations of all life forms on Earth. Packed with facts that will literally make you gasp aloud in shock and disbelief, you wont want to put the book down until you've read every last sentence.

I don't believe any other single book has had a greater impact on my life than this one. If you only read one more book in your life, make it this one.

This is a well-written, well-researched book that will open your eyes; it tells it like it is. You will be changed by this book, it's a must-read for everyone. Share your copy with someone else and buy copies for others. You won't regret it. Even those who feel they know about our food and how it is processed and comes to our dinner tables will find things they did not know at all. Everyone needs to read it so they can at least be making informed decisions about their food choices.

...you'll know what I mean after you read this book. After you've recovered, give this book to someone you love. Send a copy to your child's school principal, your doctor and your favorite grocery store. The concept of changing America's dietary habits may seem overwhelming, but it has to start with one person. That's all we really have: ourselves. Read it!
