Meet the Author

Judith Matz, LCSW, and Ellen Frankel, LCSW, are clinical social workers and sisters who grew up in the Chicago area. In 2004 they published Beyond a Shadow of a Diet: The Therapist's Guide to Treating Compulsive Eating.
Judith is the director of the Chicago Center for Overcoming Overeating, Inc., an organization dedicated to ending the preoccupation with food and weight. She has worked in the area of eating problems since 1986 and is a frequent speaker at workshops and conferences on the topics of compulsive eating and body image. She has a private practice in Skokie, Illinois.
Ellen has worked in the field of eating disorders sice 1987 in both outpatient and residential settings. Her book Beyond Measure: A Memoir about Short Stature and Inner Growth will be published in 2006. In additon to writing full time, she speaks at conferences and serves as a consultant. Ellen lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts.

In this world where we think we should all look like Kate Moss, have a 24 inch waist, and fit in a size two, the authors of this book make a great attempt to get us to see ourselves in a positive manner even if we don't fit into what we think is an "ideal" look. This book is not about dieting (because, according to the book, Diet's don't work), it is about being able to listen to your body - feeding yourself with foods your bodies crave, eating when you are hungry, not gorging yourself, and listening to your body's internal clues as to whether you truly are hungry. It is about feeling good about yourself, regardless of what the scale says. I love this book so much. It sits at my bedside and I frequently go back to it to re-read multiple sections. This is a book that will help you re-train yourself on how you should eat based on your body, as well as feeling good about yourself. In each section there is also an activity to do to help you on your path to becoming a Diet Survivor. Would definitely recommend this book!

This is such a practical book. The exercises and the quotes are so useful. I read the book from cover to cover and then went back through and worked the lessons. Seems like a lot of us can be helped by this no nonsense approach, Thanks Judith and Ellen.

This book tells you simply why Americans are fatter than ever. We diet too much! Our bodies can't handle that without getting fat. This book tells you how to reconnect with your food hunger so you don't overeat and how to accept that you will never resemble a super model!
