Overview

A bilingual collection of songs and rhymes that have accompanying hand and body motions. In this, his second collection of musical material from the Spanish-speaking countries, Jose-Luis Orozco brings together over thirty finger rhymes, play rhymes, and action songs and games for children of various ages to enjoy in Spanish and English. Crafted in a similar format as the appealing, successful De Colores and Other Latin-American Folk Songs for Children, Diez Deditos contains simple music for piano, voice, and guitar; informative background notes placing each song in context; and Spanish and English lyrics presented side by side. As well, words and diagrams show readers the appropriate motions for fingers, hands, face, or body to make. Children will delight in acting out the hand movements to songs like Pimpon Pimpon, about a puppet who can wash his face and hands and comb his hair; or Las Horas, where children move their arms like the hands of a clock; or Que Llueva, where hand gestures are used to imitate rain falling, clouds rising, and birds singing; or a host of others. Joyfully illustrated with Elisa Kleven's colorful collage paintings, the folk-art-like pictures capture the playful, celebratory mood of the selected songs. With its vibrant, detailed artwork and child-pleasing songs, this multicultural book invites readers to learn and share, and sing and act out. It will keep children entertained for years to come. Jose-Luis Orozco selected, arranged, and translated De Colores and Other Latin-American Folk Songs for Children (Dutton). He is a songwriter, a recording artist, and a specialist in multicultural education . Elisa Kleven is the acclaimed illustrator of many books, including De Colores; Abuela and Isla by Arthur Dorros; and her own The Paper Princess (all Dutton).

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Susan Hoyle Fournier
Orozco has arranged and adapted a wide selection of material from Latin America that is suitable for the earliest of reading, singing, and chanting experiences. Drawn from traditional and new materials, there are more than thirty finger plays, rhymes, and songs that are sure to be enjoyed by children and caregivers alike. Each selection is presented in English and Spanish. Simple pictographs provide directions for little fingers as well as music appropriate for the piano or the guitar. Each selection is prefaced by an anecdote from the author about what makes the piece special and how it can best be presented. The colorful illustrations make the reader feel as if they are in Latin America, experiencing typical playtime with the children of the neighborhood. In an age of promoting a more multicultural education, this collection provides an important glimpse at Latin American tradition.

Open Diez Deditos and you will have in your hands a book that sings with words, music, and color. In their first collaboration (De Colores), Orozco and Kleven introduced a delightful assortment of Latin-American folk songs for children; this time they present a bilingual collection of play rhymes and action songs for the very young that belong to the heart of Spanish-speaking families. Every entry includes bilingual lyrics, a music score for piano and guitar, easy-to-follow pictographs, and a brief text-only in English-explaining the movements and, in some cases, the origins of the song. The translation of the lyrics into English (and sometimes vice-versa, as in such American favorites as "The Wheels on the Bus") heeds the sound and rhyme pattern to fit into the melody line provided for the original text. Translating poetry for children is always a daring enterprise, and Orozco does a good job, especially considering the difficulty of working with such short verses. Kleven's illustrations bubble over with vivid detail, from the front cover to the extra hand-game on the back and all through the themed borders and everyday life vignettes. They not only expand the simple verses of old favorites such as "Pimpón" or "Aserrín, aserrán," but also root them in the wide Latin-American community. Much more than a useful resource for bilingual classrooms, Diez Deditos is a celebration of Hispanic children's common heritage that can be shared by all. A subject index is included; the songs are available on a separate CD or cassette.
