Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Dana J Lawrence, DC, MMedEd, MA (Palmer College of Chiropractic)
Description: This is a pocket guide to elements of differential diagnosis of neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) conditions, focusing in particular on neurological diagnosis and radiographic assessment as well as a condition-by-condition discussion of common NMS problems.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide rapid access to the differential diagnosis of the more commonly seen NMS conditions in general chiropractic practice. This is timely in that such pocket guides do not exist within the chiropractic profession at present.
Audience: This is targeted largely at practicing chiropractors and upper-level chiropractic students involved in clinical training. It should provide a handy reference for use in the clinical setting, and it may be of interest to other practitioners of orthopedics.
Features: The book is largely composed of a number of lists containing information about either diagnostic testing or specific NMS conditions. Chapters include cranial nerve disorders, NMS disorders, differential diagnosis based on radiography, helpful neurological lists, helpful skeletal radiology lists, and selected neurological disorders. The book has many illustrations that support its contents.
Assessment: The limited scope of this text does tend to hurt it. It does meet its goal of providing a quick screen to standard diagnostic information, and it will certainly fill a niche as a pocket guide. Its many illustrations provide visual information that enhances material presented in the text. Future editions should give thought to providing an expanded reference section and an increased amount of text discussion.
