Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
A large format edition of an earlier book by renowned author Margaret Wise Brown. In this simple story the text moves from diggers who make little holes to very large holes dug by men and their equipment. The art, while striking, at times seems inappropriate to the text. Looking at the spread with a train underground does not really provide the sense of a tunnel under the city and a river. Likewise, the tunnel through the mountain seems to leave the top of the mountain suspended in the air.
Carolyn Phelan
This reinterpretation of Brown's "The Diggers" (1960), originally published with two-color illustrations by Clement Hurd, features large, brilliantly colored oil paintings in a heroic style that romanticizes man and his machines (no gender neutrality here). The energetic, eye-catching artwork is the attraction because this is not one of the author's best texts. But that won't bother small boys in the locomotive and steam-shovel phase, who'll find lots to like here.
