Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Frank Ling, MD (University of Tennessee at Memphis College of Medicine)
Description: This is a 30-page, "bare bones" summary of obstetrics/gynecology intended for test preparation.
Purpose: It is designed to help test takers review for examinations. It is useful for those examinees who wish to do the absolute least amount of review in this area.
Audience: This book is meant for medical students only, as there is not enough material for residents or practicing physicians who already have working knowledge of the material.
Features: The entire spectrum of obstetrics/gynecology is covered in a minimalistic approach. The writing is on a personal level with almost layperson simplicity in some areas. According to the authors, significant overlap in many areas is deliberate to emphasize teaching points. References are absent in line with authors' intent to help reader pass exams. Visually appealing figures teach well in most, but not all, cases. Some errors of fact are seen, but in general, the authors did a credible job in condensing information.
Assessment: This book is too small for anyone who has any interest in learning anything that is clinically applicable. It is good for the exam taker who does not intend to pursue women's health in the future. It is an incredibly minimalistic approach, assuming that the reader has been exposed to a real textbook in the past and that the reader finds review of that text too burdensome for preparing for the upcoming examination. It is a bit disappointing that there actually may be a market for books like this. Given that student texts are not that burdensome or long to begin with, this book would seem to have limited appeal. Hopefully, students will not look upon this as an appropriate substitute for real textbooks and real understanding of the specialty.
