    Highly Useful, Pragmatic

“Digital Learning: Strengthening and Assessing 21st Century Skills” is a notable exception to a pattern I've repeatedly seen: knowing that most teachers are very busy and they genuinely care about doing a good job to prepare students to become successful, productive adults, too often the resources created to support them are either designed to do their thinking for them (step-by-step manuals) or are so abstract from the reality of schooling that they rarely penetrate the teaching and learning environment in any meaningful or lasting way. Instead, this book, with its accompanying DVD of many more resources, brings together well-crafted policy (Common Core standards and NETS standards) and a spectrum of highly useful curricular and programmatic examples, all within a clear framework for individual and collective exploration and learning that’s made possible (and imperative) with today’s technology. Classroom (and boardroom) educators will find this book a valuable springboard for designing, implementing, assessing and modifying meaningful learning experiences for students—from a day’s lesson to entire programs. I envision communities of education practitioners (across subjects, across town and across the country) using the sound advice in “Digital Learning” to energize their classes with engagement and relevance. I’ve worked with and in support of many classroom teachers, and I’ve read much of the literature on education as well as the policy and program materials that districts, states and districts put out on their behalf, and wish that those materials rose to the level of usefulness that "Digital Learning" achieves.

    Highly Recommended

In his new book, Digital Learning, Ferdi Serim coalesces for educators the essential nuggets of what's been experienced and learned over the past three decades as information and communications technology have impacted all areas of life, save a majority of school settings.
Educators, from the most traditional to the most daring, will find this book an essential resource on their digital journey. Digital Learning is a much needed overview of what has been learned and the terrain covered over the past three decades. As we ready ourselves for the exploration of Common Core Standards, it is imperative that we take stock in what we've learned from our efforts. Digital Learning is both a road map of well worn pathways and a guide book suggesting some off-the-beaten-trail possibilities.

As an avid backpacker and mountaineer, I wouldn't think of embarking on an adventure without my topographic map, compass and some knowledge about where I'm going and what I might possibly encounter. Digital Learning is such a map and journal of collective educational experience assembled by a veteran digital explorer, Ferdi Serim. Whether you're designing curriculum, planning a new program, or participating with peers in a professional community, Digital Learning gives you big, fundamental insights and practical examples you'll find very useful on your digital learning adventure.
-a fellow digital learning pioneer and adventurer
