Description: This book describes the physical basis of digital mammography in addition to discussing its clinical aspects, and presents 34 clinical cases for review and discussion.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide information to practicing radiologists and medical physicists about the full range of digital mammography. The book includes information on the physical basis of digital mammography along with illustrative clinical cases.
Audience: It is written for practicing radiologists and practicing medical physicists, but it also would be of interest to residents and fellows in breast imaging and graduate students in medical physics.
Features: The book discusses detectors for digital mammography, image acquisition, processing and display, and PACS, storage, and archiving of digital images. It discusses factors in image interpretation and artifacts, and presents clinical cases with teaching points. The book also has a chapter on breast tomosynthesis and another on breast CT. There is also a section comparing commercially available systems. The images throughout the book are of high quality. While it does not represent a true shortcoming, a future edition should include breast MRI as well as positron emission mammography.
Assessment: This is a high quality book that describes physical principles of digital mammography, discusses its clinical utility and efficacy, and presents clinical cases with teaching points. It fills a niche, providing a substantial amount of information on the physical basis of digital mammography combined with clinical information, and should prove to be a useful resource.
