Why two books by the same author on the same subject, published by the same publisher? Digital Photography; An Introduction and the KISS Guide to Digital Photography are very similar but have a slightly different approach. Although both are easy to read and are suitable for the beginner photographer, the first book is written in a more traditional format and will appeal to someone with more experience with traditional photographic techniques. While both volumes are filled with beautiful photographs that illustrate the author's points, the second book uses cartoon graphics, "simple summaries," and more white space and colorful layout notations. It is organized from the simplest issues to the most complex. The first book has a more "professional" look and feel and appears to go into more depth on some issues, including using specific models of cameras and equipment, which may make it seem out-of-date in a short time. Either book fills the niche of guidebook to the world of digital photography, depending on which approach meets the reader's comfort level. This handy, affordable little guide introduces both amateur and professional photographers to the full range of creative possibilities of digital photography. Ang here begins with an overview of equipment and software, as well as setting up an ideal workroom. He next turns to the making of digital photographs, including zooms, electronic flash, composition, and color balances. Separate chapters are devoted to scanning, including resolution, file formats, and color management; image manipulation, including cropping, burning and dodging, and color balance; and, finally, troubleshooting the myriad problems of digital imaging. This final chapter also includes a very useful glossary and lists of manufacturers, web resources, and software sources. Thorough, well organized, clearly written, and appropriately illustrated with many helpful photographs, this is one of the very best introductions to this new exciting field. Highly recommended, especially for general collections for amateur photographers that don't already have Ang's Digital Photographer's Handbook, just out last year from DK.
