With every moment bringing the human race closer to extinction, Cates finds himself in the role of both executioner and savior of the entire world.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

This intense sequel to 2007's The Electric Churchis a strong techno-thriller, but it doesn't quite match its predecessor in originality. Avery Cates is a killer-for-hire who sold his services to the shadowy System of Federated Nations and destroyed the Electric Church's plans to turn people into cyborg Monks. Now mysterious assailants have infected Cates with a plague of nanobots that kills anyone he encounters and then reanimates the corpses. His condition draws the attention of the System authorities, who wonder why Cates himself has not fallen victim to the disease; they keep him alive in an effort to identify a cure. Amid sometimes flat scenes of gunfighting, betrayal and nanotech zombie uprisings, Cates's noirish narrative voice stands out as the book's real strength. Somers's compelling writing separates this from similar works and offers hope that future volumes will come closer to the quality of the original. (May)

    Quick and Easy Read

Not as much gunplay as The Electric Church. Author wounds (injuries inflicted upon him) Cates to such a point that it becomes difficult to imagine how the guy is still conscious. Cates is on the run, again, from cover to cover. Very fast paced and easy to read much like T.E.C. Leaves door open for a third or perhaps even more books along the Avery Cates saga. If you want to cling to every character for eternity or perhaps even have them over for dinner.....this is not your book. Guy goes through characters like Cates goes through cigarettes. Don't get attached to anyone. It was good, quick, and fun.......just like Avery cates.

    Not quite the successor...

Another entry in the Cates series. This one finds our anti-hero infected with a nano plague that kills off anyone who gets within a few yards of him. This pretty much kills off any and all of his friends in short order and leaves him on his own. A little more drawn out in the storyline, this one isn't quite as unique or original as it's predecessor. Still worth an afternoon read though!

    I Also Recommend:

Fantastic! Even more twists & turns than The Electric Church!

This is book 2 of the Avery Cates series (book 1 being The Electric Church) and I loved it even more than the first. This is a direct sequel, so don't start with this book - it picks up right where the first left off. Everything I loved about the original is back, even characters I didn't expect to see again. The plot took me by surprise in the best possible way (like a great episode of 24). I love this series, lots of cool ideas that don't get in the way of a fast paced story. If you enjoyed the first, you've gotta to read this!

A superb adrenalin pumping sf thriller

The System of Federated Nations hired professional hit-man Avery Cates who successfully derailed the plans of the Electric Church to turn people into zombie cyborg Monks. However Cates has no time to enjoy his victory because somehow mystifying assailants contaminated him with nanobots that kill anyone who comes near him, but these victims of his nanobot disease don¿t stay dead they turn into zombies.-------------- His former client the System learns of Cates¿ peculiar pariah condition and decides to catch him as the scientists and leaders wonder why he seems immune to the deadly nanobot¿s disease. Somehow he is just a carrier. They plan to use his body to find a cure for the infection. Cates has no say in the matter even though he does not want to be a guinea pig.----------------- The sequel to THE ELECTRIC CHURCH continues the science fiction Noir escapades of Cates who is everyone¿s target once again. His first hand account of battling religious fundamentalists, nanotech zombies, research scientists, and an assortment of unclassified ilk make for a wild entertaining thriller. THE DIGITAL PLAGUE likes it predecessor belongs to the hero who is in more gun battles than John Wayne ever was.---------------- Harriet Klausner
