From the soft-focused, impeccably styled, tasteful cover photo -- better suited for Harper's Bazaar than a pop album -- to the haughty implications of the title, Hilary Duff's third album, Dignity, appears to be the teen star's self-styled, self-conscious adult album. Almost too adult, actually, since the packaging makes it seem like Hilary skipped over her wild, restless years and headed straight toward polished adult contemporary blandness. All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
But, as Bo Diddley once sang, you can't judge a book by looking at its cover, and Dignity isn't quite what it seems. To be sure, it's an adult album, but it's a young adult album, driven almost entirely by gleaming electronic beats, consisting almost entirely of dance songs, and never once seeming as stuffy as that ill-conceived cover. While it is never as stylish and brittle as the cold, robotic funk of FutureSex/LoveSounds, Dignity surely strives to be a happier, friendlier spin on that electro-pop sound -- dance-pop for people who never set foot in clubs, which also means that even if the rhythms are pushed to the forefront, the tracks are built upon a strong songwriting foundation that, thanks to teen pop impresario Kara DioGuardi, are sturdy, hooky, and memorable. It's the kind of music made be somebody who knows what's fashionable but isn't by any means a trend-setter, but that, in a nutshell, is who Hilary Duff is: she's not the coolest kid around, but she's the popular girl who's still friendly to the misfits, nerds, and burnouts, so everybody still likes her even if it's at times begrudging. That persona shines strongly on Dignity, which bears a stronger autobiographical imprint than almost any other teen pop album of the 2000s. Despite that glossy photo, Hilary comes across as contradictory and conflicted as any 20-year-old in the throes of a messy, public breakup would. At its core, Dignity is the sound of the most popular girl at school shedding her long-time boyfriend and her old friends and starting life all over again. The ex-friends she takes completely unveiled swipes at are Lindsay and Britney, who earn Hilary's disdain as they party away in the Hollywood Hills, while the boyfriend is Good Charlotte's Joel Madden -- and knowing all this via tabloids and gossip blogs actually makes Dignity's literal lyrics more interesting, since when she sings about being tempted by dangerous older men or rediscovering a part of her she lost or even fending off stalkers, they play like confessions, not inventions. Having these journal entries married to sleek wannabe club beats gives this an appealingly fresh, contemporary feel, as the sound matches the ideas behind the lyrics; it's the sound of teen pop growing old in the late 2000s. Too bad, then, that Hilary still sounds like a girl. She doesn't quite sound like the spunky Lizzy McGuire, but her voice is thin, sweet, fragile, not at all like a woman, so Dignity can occasionally feel like she's trying on her big sister's clothes as she imagines what her life will be like once she's all grown up (which also gives the Madden back-story a real creepy predatory undercurrent). Even if it's hard not to wish Hilary sounded closer to her age, with this small voice she still sounds relatable and, most of all, likeable -- perceptions that are only enhanced by her determined desire to hold onto her dignity in this tabloid age. She may still be caught between childhood and womanhood, but on Dignity she makes some serious headway into turning into a mature recording artist, which makes this an effective, strangely endearing album.

    Hilary's changed!!

Alot of u know her as Lizzie Mcguire but she's leaving Lizzie behind and taking over the music world. Hilary's new album I was shocked to see because she's all grown up. I like "With Love" and the sound is very different from her other albums.

    amazing

i have never ever been a hilary duff fan but when i first heard this album i was amazed... i was actually really amazed at how mature this album is and how different the sound is... duff has found her niche finally and she should stay with this music cuz it suits her and her voice. i bought the album and was not disappointed. this album proves to the world that duff can sing and she can write her own music. some of the key tracks that stick out are: stranger-9/10 a very upbeat indian themed song with excellent lyrics which i think she wrote about her ex from good charlotte dignity-9/10- a very good song about hollywood and the celebrities who have no dignity example nicole richie gypsy woman-10/10 my absolute favorite song on this album.. i love the lyrics and ms.duff can really hit those notes.. i thought it was about nicole richie and i found out it was about her dad cheating on her mom.. a very mystical arabian themed song. burned: 8/10 an ok song about her ex play with fire: 10/10 excellent beat in all hilary has grown up from her teen pop days and has matured and grown from her break up with joel madden... in your face america she's grown up in a mature 20 year old... no electronic enhanced vocals anymore this girl can sing without any problems...

Hilary Duff brings new light to the world of teen beat!

Hilary Duff has done it again with releasing her best album yet in the world of teen beat and a little bit of pop mixed in. After leaving the world of Lizzie McGuire and her perky self as a singer and actress, Hilary Duff has really changed in her music such as in her voice and in her lyrics. She is no longer the little blonde headed actress with bangs that made her so famous or the active blonde pop singer in her albums such as Metamorphosis and Most Wanted that made her be recongized in the singing world. No- She is now a new person with her music and really proves that in the way she sings and the tempos that she uses. Like any other singer, Duff uses past experiences and emotions to bring together all new songs for the world to enjoy. She relates to family issues such as in the song "Gypsy Woman" she relates from her past love life, mostly to her latest ex Joel Madden from Good Charlotte, in her songs such as "Stranger", "Danger" and "Burned" and then she brings back her world of pop in her songs, including her best hit on the whole CD "With Love". This album defintitely is a whole different side of Hilary Duff. She has not only changed her music but she has also brought her reputation in pop to a whole new level.

    Hilary has finally found herself

Hilary finally knows who she is and this album proves it. She writing songs from her own life. She sings about bad girls, but I think she could have gotten some bad girl in her on the way. There's a great dance-a-long/sing-a-long vibe to this cd. Great job Hilary. You really nailed it.

    Hilary Duff - Dignity Review

The music style of hilary duff totally changed. 'Dignity album is very much grown up in music and style of the lyrics. But i find her voice is not as mature as her previous attempt at the 2nd self-titled album... About the album: About the rest of songs itself.. it's pretty cool You can find a dancey song like 'Stranger' as the 1st track which is rumored to her next single.. It's one of my favourites.. I give that 8.5 out of 10.. Then another fast beat song like 'Dignity' as the 2nd track.. The lyrics is kinda cool I think it's dedicated to people like Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie as she mentioned something like.."it's not new when you get new bags" or something like that... Which my second fvrits of the songs 8.5/10 3rd song, another favourites.. with love 8/10 Next you will find a 80's style song called danger.. Many claim that it's a bad song but i find it's much a cool song... i enjoy it very much about the dangerous relationship.. a more dark song.. 9/10 The 'gypsy woman' which is rumored to have concern with her feud, Nicole Richie but it is her mom instead.. I think she's quite mad about mom.. that she include sort of anger inside the song.. a song that you'll easily like This song is killer 9/10 Next is a cheesy song that i think it's hilary's worst...'Never stop' 1/10 Next you'll find 'No work, all play' it sounds quite boring.. 6/10 'Between you and me' A song about her broken relationship with Joel (good charlotte)... I thought it's a cheap song 4/10 Another cheesy song.. 'Dreamer' 5/10 'Happy' This is probably not one of my favorite but i do like this song.. she sounds most matured in this song it's previously sounds like play with fire instrumental but they change the sound to be more awful.. but it's a good song with good lyrics 8/10 'Burned' another favorite it's a kinda of song that contain kind of intensity like music you can find in Happy This song is much darker.. Instrument is very cool Love it! 9/10 You'll find next is 'outside of you' another transition of music here she sounds like T.A.T.U 8/10 'I wish' not so great.. 5/10 play with fire 7.5/10
