Overview

Technology definitely has its place in music -- in fact, everyone from South-Central L.A. hip-hoppers to Algerian rai artists has done marvelous things with it. But there's always something to be said for spontaneity and for music that's played in real time. Henry Cook knows how exciting spontaneity and honest-to-God musicianship can be, and those things play an indispensable role on Dimensional Odyssey. Recorded live at the Willow Jazz Club in Somerville, MA in 1994, this post-bop CD finds the saxman/flutist leading a very cohesive acoustic sextet that includes Bobby Ward on drums, Cecil Brooks on trumpet, Jacques Chanier on piano, and Brian McCree on bass. The musicians enjoy a strong rapport, and the jazz-without-a-safety-net approach serves them well on pieces that range from the lyrical, Ellington-esque "Sequences for the Duke" and the haunting "Prayer for Bosnia" to the Middle Eastern-influenced "Arabesque" and the angular "Echoes of Nichols" (which was obviously inspired by the challenging music of pianist Herbie Nichols, one of jazz's unsung heroes). Although Dimensional Odyssey is more inside than outside, the band's set takes an avant-garde turn with the abstract, AACM-like "Mind's Eye." Those who enjoyed Cook's subsequent Accurate release Live at Montreux/Detroit will also find a lot to admire about Dimensional Odyssey.
