School Library Journal - School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-- Mama is furious at Dinah for drawing on the newly painted walls. Dinah is furious at Mama for yelling at her. From upstairs to downstairs and back again, readers see how each character vents her anger. Mama gets on her Exercycle and whizzes the pedals around and around. Dinah, meanwhile, slams the door to her room, barricades it with a chair, and then plops herself in her rocker. As she bangs back and forth, she fantasizes about all of the horrid things that should happen to her mean mother to make her sorry for yelling at her. Mama remembers how angry her mother was when she cut up the curtains, while Dinah worries that her wishes might come true. Together Mama and Dinah meet lovingly at the bedroom door for a warm reconciliation. McCully's expressive illustrations in pen and colored wash capture the humorous side to this recognizable, common experience. As with The Thinking Place (Knopf, 1982) and Jam Day (Harper, 1987), Joosse sets a non-threatening tone for a group discussion on feelings. --Ellen Dibner, East School, Long Beach, N.Y.
