Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Krisan Murphy
"What kind of animal should you never trust? An am-FIB-ian." This is a sample of the kind of silly jokes that fill this "Laugh and Learn About Science" book in the "Super Silly Science Jokes" series. What an ingenious idea to pair science learning with one-liners that students will repeat over and over! There are seventeen two-page chapters covering such topics as "An Ocean of Life," "Traveling Tetrapods," "Giant Meat Eaters," and "Monsters of the Sea." The colorful pages are well-designed and easy to follow; in each section, one page of information is followed by a corresponding page with two jokes. The highlight of the book comes at the end, where the author explains in detail how to write a joke. Readers learn how to write a joke using popular expressions, playing with homographs and homophones, exploring similar sounds, trying different meanings, engaging rhyme, or just plain getting silly. There is even a challenge for joke writers to submit a joke for publication via the author's website. Also included is a list of definitions of words within the book, a list of books and websites for further study, and an index. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy
