The maps in this atlas have icons that indicate where dinosaurs lived in each part of the world. Dinosaurs are among the most spectacular examples of evolution. The process of evolution began over 3,500 million years ago in the sea. The earliest traces of these beginning life forms have been found in Australia. The dinosaurs of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods evolved many years after these first beginnings. The Triassic world was recovering from a mass extinction. Those animals that did survive included the first true mammals and marine reptiles. The Jurassic period was a time of climate change caused by the repositioning of landmasses. Mammal-like reptiles became extinct and their mammalian descendants did not flourish again for 140 million years. The warm, damp climates of the Cretaceous period enabled the dinosaurs to keep evolving. Everything that is known about dinosaurs has been deduced from their fossils. Fossils are primarily teeth and bones that have turned to stone as minerals replaced the once-living tissue. This was most likely to happen under water. That is why fossils of sea creatures are most common. Lavish illustrated maps show fossil locations, depictions of various dinosaur habitats, and current day landscapes where fossils are found. Acetate overlays allow the reader to see the skeletal system of numerous species of dinosaurs. An interactive CD features six dinosaurs. Each can be accessed separately as a 3D model that can be spun around to examine the body or just the skeleton. The reader can make the dinosaur skeleton run or jump up and open its jaws. The large format and spiral spine facilitate easy reading of this publication that is chock full ofinformation.

    Excellent Educational Book!!

    I bought this book for my 5 1/2 year old grandson. While this book is really written for older children, I find that children can grow with this book. The way the book is constructed it allows for young children to identify the dinosaurs, learn about the various periods, and learn some basics facts. As they grow they can learn more details about the dinosaurs and the world in which they existed. I expect my grandson to have many years of learning with this book. Adjectives I would use are exceptional and well done.

    Highly recommended from my grandson!

    My 6 yr old grandson wanted a dinosaur book that was not for little kids! He already knows a lot about dinosaurs and wanted to know more but of course I had to make sure he could read it. This book was perfect for him and he loves it! He was fascinated with the pictures and how it shows where each dinosaur is from.

    book and cd-rom is great

    The cd-rom has its positives and negatives. It has 6 dinosaurs computer generated in skeleton and in the flesh that you can animate. There is no sound (down side), but my 4 year old is mesmerized by the dinosaurs movement (its cool). But there are only 6 dinosaurs on the cd-rom so my son was disappointed in how few there were. The book is neat because it has see through lay overs of the skeletons that lay over the dinosaurs; which is cool.

    Dinos Rule!

    I bought this book for my 9 year old son. He says that one day he would like to be a Paleontologist. Of course when he was 5, he wanted to be an Railway Engineer so he could work with Thomas the Tankengine. So I was a little worried about how he would receive this book. Once I presented it to him, he fell in love with the book and carried it around the house never putting it down. He eventually took it to school to show his friends what a cool book he had. The book was a good mix of facts and pictures and he has set about learning every single detail about every single dino there is listed in the book! 'sigh' If only I could get that same enthusiasm transferred to his school work! ha The book comes with a DVD that allows the user to get a 3D look at the dinos not only from their exterior appearance but from their insides as well in which you get to see how their skeletal structure looks and moves. I can't remember if the DVD contained any sounds but I do remember there were only 6 dinos on which to observe. Bummer! Overall, its worth the money and I recommend it for your future paleontologist as well. :)
