AGERANGE: Ages 7 to 10.

The package includes a book and a box with a pull-out drawer. The book provides background information about archaeologists and paleontologists, the type of work they do, and how they go about doing it. There is a bit of history relating to both fields, interesting facts about finds, some of which were made by kids, and the interest that has existed for centuries about extinct animals such as dinosaurs. There is plenty of factual information about several of the really large dinosaurs, how fossils come to light, the detailed and time consuming work to reconstruct these creatures from bone fragments and even what scientists can learn from prehistoric poop. There is a time line showing that an interest in archaeology dates back to 500 BC and that discoveries are continuing to the present. The kit includes materials to help budding fossil hunters and, when the weather does not permit hunting outside, there is a card game to while away the hours and learn even more facts about dinosaurs. The small font in the book may be a problem for young readers, but if they really love dinosaurs, they will undoubtedly persevere. A good choice to pull out on a rainy day or any day when a child may be confined or home. However, I did find it impossible to slip the book back into the slot on the inside cover.
