School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-- This attractive book gives directions for making three-dimensional paper models of nine prehistoric creatures and three prehistoric plants. Included are dinosaurs, a mammoth, and a giant dragonfly. Supplies needed include construction paper, glue, paper tubes, scissors, ruler, pencil, and an occasional can or clothespin. Directions are given in clearly worded, numbered paragraphs supplemented by an informative color photograph of each project and a sequence of illustrative diagrams. The diagrams are generally clear and helpful, but are not numbered. The creatures' simple appearance and the fact that they have names like Stanley Stegosaurus and Trudy Triceratops mark this as a craft book for younger children. However, one repeated procedure, that of using a small traced and cut-out shape as a pattern to draw around, would be tricky even for older children. In both the skills required and the sophistication of the projects, this volume falls between the simpler Dinosaurs and Monsters (Watts, 1984) and David Hawcock's Paper Dinosaurs (Sterling, 1988). --Cynthia Bishop, Onondaga County Public Library, Syracuse, NY
