Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Baumann
Dinosaurs had many physical adaptations that enabled them to feed themselves in a variety of habitats. This title from the "Dinosaur Dig" series focuses on the many physical characteristics of plant- and meat-eating dinosaurs. Some dinosaurs had sharp teeth to shred or slice tough plant material; others had tongues that allowed them to pull leaves into their mouths. The leaves were bitten off by beaks at the front of their jaws. Large sharp claws were another feature to help dinosaurs dig for food, insects, and water. Scales protected dinosaurs from losing water from their bodies, allowing them to drink less than other animals. A typographical error on page 10 using reptile instead of reptiles is distracting to the reader. Some of the information appears in other books in this series such as chapter one titled "Dinosaur Dig." Each two-page chapter explains a characteristic and uses photographs, diagrams, maps, and a WOW! fact box to convey information. The main idea of the chapter is in bold text. However this is misleading since a note to readers states all glossary words are in bold. Occasionally the glossary words are in regular type if placed in a main idea. In addition, a size box is provided for readers to see comparisons of an average person with a particular dinosaur. The illustrated Dino Guide provides pronunciation, size, weight, and diet of 30 dinosaurs categorized by time period. A glossary and index are also provided. Even with the weaknesses, illustrations of dinosaur fossils, maps, and WOW! facts will provide dinosaur fans with some interesting facts. Reviewer: Nancy Baumann
