Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
To the delight of preschoolers, Dale’s brightly colored dinosaurs have already dug and zoomed in a variety of vehicles. Here they are again, this time brave and speedy rescuers inspired, the author-illustrator tells us, by observing her grandson setting up a toy truck for a crash on his wooden train tracks. On the front endpapers, viewers meet the dinosaurs, including a red carnotaurus, a green triceratops, and a blue stegosaurus with lavender plates. Well, why not? Young dino-lovers can identify colors, while learning some formidable dinosaur names. Next, a green locomotive roars along, nobody realizing that three dinos in a pickup have crashed on the tracks ahead. When they call Dinosaur Rescue, a fire truck and an ambulance rush to the scene, followed by a blue police car and a yellow helicopter to warn and help. Will the train be able to stop? Youngest viewers might actually like to see a crash, but the dino engineer screeches to a halt, sparks flying from the braking wheels. Busy workers sort out the mess as a tow truck hauls off the pickup and the rescuers return to headquarters, relaxing, eating, and playing dino basketball. The fascination of this tale is partly the frantic action (helped along by onomatopoetic words and the Kosmic Bold typeface), partly the fun of seeing dinosaurs behaving like humans. Though adults may find the contrast of realistic surroundings and anthropomorphic monsters rather disturbing, preschoolers will not care in this celebration of two of their most popular obsessions—they will cheer both rescuers and vehicles through the action spreads right to the final endpapers depicting trucks, police car, engine, and helicopter. For other rousing read-alouds, check out Dale’s Dinosaur Dig (Nosy Crow, 2011) and Dinosaur Zoom (Nosy Crow, 2013). Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft; Ages 2 to 6.

PreS–When an orange pickup truck gets stuck on the train tracks, it's up to the dinosaur community to help stop the approaching train. The Dinosaur Rescue team is quickly called. An ambulance ("Wee-ooo!"), police car, helicopter ("Choppa!"), and other emergency vehicles are soon on the scene, working together to make sure everyone is safe. At the end of the day, it is time for the rescue dinosaurs to rest and play, and they are seen snacking, reading, coloring, and engaging in sports. The concluding two pages show the dinosaurs snug in their beds under a star-sprinkled sky. Friendly, colorful characters fill each spread, and text in a bold, playful font tells the story. Illustrations in watercolor and pencil fill the spreads. Onomatopoetic, noisy words are repeated, which can help children sound them out phonetically. Beginning endpapers feature 10 different kinds of dinosaurs and their names, and closing endpapers display and name the vehicles. Pair this picture book with Dale's other dinosaur titles for a real chugga-chugga time.—Krista Welz, North Bergen High School, NJ

Dale does for rescue vehicles what she did for an array of cars and trucks in Dinosaur Zoom! (2013)--namely, sends them racing toward a rendezvous with jewel-toned dinos in their drivers' seats. Uh-oh, a loaded truck is stuck partway through a railroad crossing, and a train is barreling down the track. Send for Dinosaur Rescue! Set to a patterned text that repeats end words or phrases in the next lines ("Rescue dinosaurs rushing. / Rushing to get there in time. / To get there in time, / before it's too late!"), the increasingly melodramatic scenes feature scads of dinosaurs. They are anthropomorphized but identifiable and drawn in exacting detail, and they hasten to the scene of the prospective disaster in a brightly colored fire truck, ambulance, helicopter or like conveyance. They then busily provide first aid and other services after stopping the train "just…in…time!" These scaly civil servants then wheel back to their headquarters to unwind and bed down. A labeled cast list of dinos at one end and trucks at the other sandwich this yummy treat for fans of all things large and roaring. (Picture book. 3-6)
