Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This large ( 12 inch by 10 inch) somewhat cumbersome book with a cover displaying the face of a Tyrannosaurus rex with a mouth full of fearsome teeth presents a different approach to the study of dinosaurs. Most startling is that many of the dinosaurs are depicted in brilliant colors—red, yellow, blue with white and black. Eleven of the twenty-eight unnumbered pages have envelopes full of information or flaps ranging in style and size, from a 1 inch by 4 inch flap of a dinosaur egg with a fetus inside, to several full-page flaps with yet more facts. There is one oval window cut into a page allowing three trees on one side to become three dinosaurs when the page is turned. Type is present in three styles: typewriter, handwritten, or typeset. The handwriting is old-fashioned and is mysteriously used for headlines on the typeset pages. The letter in the first envelope is typewritten but signed in the same hand that labels the pages and identifies many of the sketches. We are lead to believe that it is this man who determined that since no dinosaur skin survives, they might have had vivid coloring, especially the birds. The art has the same confusing assortment of styles as the text. There are pages with finely detailed black-and-white sketches, a sea scene in full color with what appears to be a prehistoric scuba diver swimming among the mosasaurs, and many charts illustrated with very small colored drawings of identified dinosaurs. This would be most suitable for young readers who cannot get too much dinosaur lore. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
