Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
This nonfiction early reader takes youngsters on a bus tour to Dinosaur World. Of course, we cannot see dinosaurs anymore—you just have to pretend that you are seeing them. The park is laid out like many amusement parks with color-coded sections indicating which era the dinosaurs lived. In this particular early reader three periods are emphasized—Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. As we step back in time, we meet a multitude of dinosaurs ranging from those that were huge to very tiny ones. For example, the diplodocus which was a plant eater grew up to 115 feet in length. It lived near rivers and devoured tons of ferns, moss, bushes and trees. Stegosaurus is one that kids that may recognize more readily. It had hard plates along its back and spines on its tail. It too was a plant eater. As this imaginary bus travels through Dinosaur World, we enter the Cretaceous era. There we see a heard of duckbilled dinosaurs. What is particularly interesting is that they had a variety of crests, different skin patterns and made different sounds. Also during this time period we would find one of the most deadly dinosaurs, the deinonychus, which was about the size of a small car and hunted in packs. It preyed upon the large plant eaters such as the duckbill. Of course another familiar dinosaur is the Tyrannosaurus Rex one of the biggest hunters of the Cretaceous era. At the end of our tour, readers learn that dinosaurs became extinct about 65 million years ago. There is an explanation of how fossils are made and where readers can go and see skeletons of dinosaurs. The book closes with a glossary and a much needed pronunciation guide to the dinosaur names. There also is an index. The front cover contains a note to parents, which could also apply to teachers, and it introduces the "Kingfisher Readers" which constitute a program designed to help young readers build skills, confidence and a love of reading as they explore their favorite topics. There are tips to help a young person before reading the book, while reading the book and after reading the book. This particular reader is marked as level 3, aimed at those who are reading alone but may need some help. It is distinguished by short paragraphs and some specialized vocabulary, captions, fact boxes and back matter as previously mentioned. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
