Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
If you have ever wanted to read about every dinosaur that has been scientifically discovered, then you have finally found that all-in-one book you have been looking for. Each of the seven hundred, alphabetically listed dinosaurs has its name explained (which can be quite interesting in some cases), its vital statistics given, and then its "details" are described. These can vary from a simple description of what the dinosaur might have looked like, to how the dinosaur hunted for its food, to where the best specimens of fossils were found. Throughout the book, there are may wonderful full-page and smaller illustrations of the dinosaurs and their world. In addition, boxes feature the men and women who made some of the great landmark discoveries in paleontology. Additional boxes highlight little known but fascinating facts about dinosaurs that may be of particular interest to younger readers. In the front of the book, before the encyclopedia-proper begins, readers will find a forward written by "Dino" Don Lessem, a description of how the book is organized, and several short chapters about dinosaurs and how they are discovered. In the back of the book there is a resources section which lists books, videos, favorite Web sites, museums, and paleontological expeditions. This is truly a book dip to into again and again 2003, Scholastic Reference, Ages 10 up.

VOYA
This resource informs readers that a new type of dinosaur is found once every two weeks, and the book covers "just about every dinosaur named by science." Newly uncovered knowledge in dinosaur research requires an updated source supplanting obsolete information, which this title accomplishes quite well. Students will devour cool tidbits telling them that the average size of a dinosaur was as big as a minivan and the largest was taller than a six-story building. This easy-to-use title describes how dinosaurs lived and behaved, and it details their surrounding environment. Beginning with sections outlining the book's organization and providing a helpful time line, the text then becomes a dictionary, listing dinosaurs alphabetically. Information about each animal consists of its name, time of existence, the place where it roamed, and the size of the beast. Color illustrations highlight the book, often placing multiple pictures on each page. Unfortunately page numbers, often cross-referenced by notes, are placed halfway up each page, a location readers' eyes will not immediately pinpoint. Facts found inside informational boxes can be easily documented, thus increasing the book's worth as a middle school source. This resource's emphasized biographical details of current research scientists seem beyond the targeted age of this book. Minor complaints aside, this informative single volume is a worthy addition to libraries with tight budgets. School and public libraries with an extensive dinosaur collection would be wise to create space for this fact-filled book also. VOYA Codes: 4Q 3P M J (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses; Will appeal with pushing; Middle School, defined asgrades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9). 2003, Scholastic, 224p.; Glossary. Illus. Photos. Maps. Charts. Further Reading. Chronology., Ages 11 to 15.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-An attractive and useful resource. Introductory essays cover topics such as how dinosaurs are named and grouped. The heart of the book is the alphabetical list of more than 700 entries, providing pronunciation, name derivation, classification, size, era, geographical location, and diet for each species. Brief paragraphs offer further descriptions, behaviors, and interesting facts. Only dinosaurs are covered, with no flying reptiles or ichthyosaurs to confuse things. Discoveries, such as Nigersaurus from 1999, are included, and several more recent finds are grouped at the end. See references lead readers from common names to the correct entry, so researchers looking for Brontosaurus are neatly guided to Apatosaurus. Most of the dinosaurs are accompanied by small illustrations, either of the animal or its fossil, and numerous striking full-page paintings show these creatures in their habitats, often in active poses that grab the eye. This encyclopedia fills a gap between simpler volumes, such as Jim Pipe's Dinosaurs A to Z (Copper Beech, 2003) and Rupert Matthews's Dinosaurs A-Z (Blackbirch, 2002), and ones with broader scope like Paul Barrett's National Geographic Dinosaurs (National Geographic, 2001) and David Burnie's The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia (Kingfisher, 2001). The concise entries, dictionary organization, and comprehensive coverage make this an excellent choice for circulating and reference shelves.-Steven Engelfried, Beaverton City Library, OR Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
