Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Boynton's (Snoozers) signature style showcases a restless baby dinosaur who can't go to bed without his (or her) security blanket in this charming large-trim board book. Her rhyming text cajoles the little creature to settle down: "Dinosaur O Dinosaur,/ you fuss and fret and yawn./ It's time to brush your dino teeth/ and put your p.j.'s on." A silver foil moon, red felt blanket and yellow felt "binkit" (no ordinary blanket, that) are among the touchable elements: in one of the most amusing flaps, the wail "I NEED MY BINKIT!" is emblazoned across the inside of Dinosaur's big, pink, tooth-lined mouth. The book is cute without being cloying, thanks to the authorial voice, which softens from stern to sympathetic, and the dino's comic desperation. This light, witty treatment of the eternal subjects of the "blanky" and the bedtime tantrum will make a welcome addition to the bedside bookshelf. And with its felt inserts, it's a book kids can really cozy up to. Ages 3 mos.-5 yrs. (Sept.)

The big green dinosaur is getting ready to settle down for the night, when he suddenly cries, "Where is my binkit?" No one seems to know what he wants and our poor dinosaur just fusses and frets. A young boy hears him crying and offers a soft yellow handkerchief and to no one's surprise, it turns out to be the binkit. The rhyming text and amusing illustrations are typical Boynton. The touch and feel components of the book as well as a few flaps that can be lifted offer even more fun to young listeners. 1998, Little Simon,

Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton is a popular American humorist, songwriter, children’s author, and illustrator. Boynton has written and illustrated more than forty books for both children and adults, as well as more than four thousand greeting cards and four music albums. She has designed—for various companies—calendars, wallpaper, bedding, stationery, paper goods, clothing, jewelry, and plush toys.

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

My son loves this book! We found it first at our local library and checked it out so much I had to buy it. Great book to read before bedtime.

    Perfect Bedtime Story

Our 2 year old LOVES this book! He too has a binkit and we've been through this bedtime routine of searching for the binkit. He loves dinosaurs and loves that this dino has the same problems finding his binkit at bedtime as he does. Too cute!

    Funny :)

My 3-year old thinks this book is hilarious! Especially the part where the dinosaur opens his mouth and says "I need my binkit!"

My kids still love this book

I bought this book when my daughter was a baby, 9 years ago. She loved this book then and she loves it now. It is a favorite of my 6 year old son too. We have read the book so much that it's falling apart. Recently I purchased this book for my neighbors baby. Tonight I ordered 2 more so that some day I can give them to my children's children.

    It's A Hit!

I love Boynton's books and when I saw this I knew it would be perfect for my 2 year old daughter. She is attatched to her 'banket' as we call it. The book is adorable and she prefers it over any of her others. A favorite before nap or bedtime read!

I just wanted to tell all parents out there ....this is the book for bedtime. My son adores this one and he can lift the flaps and feel the soft textures in the book. I read it to him with lots of expression in my voice. He has had this book since he was about 1 year old...he is now 3 and I am getting ready to purchase another, only because he used to chew all the edges of his board books, but we still go back to this one each night....your little one will enjoy it!

A favorite for over a year!

This was the first book my son really recognized and would choose as a good night reading book. Now, over a year later (he is 2 yrs, 4 mo), he still loves it, still chooses it, and still laughs every time we lift or open a flap. And, of course, he now has is own favorite binkit!

    Not just for infants

My 20 month old little boy has a blanket and when I saw this title I thought that it would be cute. Well, he loves it. He has it memorized and when I ask him what he wants to read, he will go get the book, turn the pages and dramatically act out the story. He has now changed the name of his 'blanket' to 'binkit'. It is adorable and I highly recommend it!

    Josh's favourite

My one year old son likes this book so much I had his bedroom painted according to the story. He loves to open Dinosaur's mouth, and find him under the blanket. It is a part of our night time ritual. Boynton's stories of rhymes and bright colours make reading a great family fun time!

    Makes BedTime a Snap!

I only bought this book because I saw the other recommendations -- and wow, am I glad I did! We use this book every night with my 8.5 month old as her Bedtime Ritual book. Whenever she hears 'Binkit' she gets all excited... she loves grabbing all the fold out surprise pages, and petting the soft items. Getting her to bed used to be a nightmare, but with this book as the high note to end every day, she goes to bed happy and without fussing!
