Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Eleanor Heldrich
This new title by "Discoverology" is an ideal mix of text and movables. There are wheels, flaps, and pop-ups, and all of them move the information forward and enhance understanding of the subject. Even the cover picture of a dinosaur has a movable section that reveals the bone and teeth structure of the giant reptile's face. The information in the book is divided into two-page sections which start with an answer to the question "What Were the Dinosaurs?" and divides them into two types, bird-hipped and lizard-hipped. "The Age of the Dinosaurs" establishes where they lived and why and "Early Discoveries" reveals that finding pieces of dinosaur bones took place long before people knew what they were. The next sections discuss and classify the different varieties of "terrible lizards," their capabilities, and their limitations. There were dinosaurs that lived solitary lives and those that lived in herds. Some could run and some were swimmers, but all of them, apparently, were hatched from eggs. The book closes with an explanation for the end of dinosaurs on earth. One of the better recent books about dinosaurs. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich

Gr 3–6—Among the eye-catching pop-ups, spinning wheels, and lifting flaps are paragraphs of text and informative captions logically placed with their illustrations. Topics featured include "Deadly Hunters," "Protective Armor," and "Flying Reptiles" (can't leave out those non-dino Pterosaurs—or Pliosaurs either, for that matter). The artwork is colorful and plentiful, the readable snippets of text brief and to the point, and the paper engineering adequate. The binding is a tad sturdier than others of its kind, such as Robert Mash's equally appealing Extreme Dinosaurs (S & S, 2007), but enthusiastic pulling, lifting, pushing, and turning may lead to premature extinction unless protective reinforcement is applied.—Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

    not right!

This page for the book is not right! I received Animal fun touch and feel Dinosaurs which is what the cover picture and the overview show/describe. However when I ordered I wasn't paying complete attention as I thought I was ordering Dinosaurs by Dougal Dixon which is what the 2 inside pictures and annotation show/describe.

My son loves the touch and feel book so I will keep it and re-order the other one or buy it in person later. The touch and feel book has cute, friendly looking dinosaurs illustrated with bright colors. A lot of the textures appear to be the same, not too much variety. The words are pretty basic. Great for younger kids. My son is 2 and I think it is a little young for him but he really likes the pictures.
