Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Suzanne Javid
Scientists know there has been life on Earth for over three billion years. Among the fossils they have found are creatures called dinosaurs. Not all dinosaurs were created equal. Some had long necks, others had arms longer than their legs, and some species had thousands of teeth in the back of their mouth. Up until sixty-five million years ago, these creatures ruled our planet. Suddenly, they were gone. Through the "Discover the Dinosaurs" series, readers can find scientific information and bold new visions of these creatures in their historical habitats. Flying dinosaurs are profiled including Caulkicephalus, Archaeopteryx, and Pterodactylus and others during the Devonian, Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Bold, detailed, and vibrantly colored visions of the creatures are brought to life by illustrator Rey throughout the thirty-two glossy pages. Although the many additional features make this a wonderful resource or reference for school age children and their teachers, some early or challenged learners may find it difficult to attend to the information-packed pages. A table of contents, a glossary highlighting new vocabulary, an index, pronunciation guide, timeline, review quizzes and data boxes with scale diagrams are included. All words in the glossary appear in bold the first time they appear in the book. Other titles in the series include Dinosaurs in the Sea, Meat-Eating Dinosaurs, and Plant-Eating Dinosaurs. Got a dinosaur-related question? This series has the answers and more. Reviewer: Suzanne Javid
Children's Literature - Hazel Buys
Modern forensics includes a dizzying array of techniques and sciences, all specialized in the forensics lab to provide clues and evidence used to solve crimes. The different types of science or technology, e.g., fingerprinting, autopsy, the study of soils and seeds, DNA evidence, are discussed in 2-page spreads supported by color photographs and bright, contrasting graphics which give the pages a contemporary, energetic appearance. Sidebars, labeled "Busted," "Fact File" and "On Target," give further information about the forensic science under discussion or a related case history. This book, one in the "Inside Crime" series, concludes with a glossary, a list of resources labeled "Further Information," an index and an abbreviated description of other books in the series. Hynson's book would be a good addition to a middle school or high school library or science class focusing on modern forensics. Reviewer: Hazel Buys
