Overview

Josie is fascinated with the secrets of the prehistoric world. She and her grandfather, an amateur paleontologist, explore the beaches and cliffs near Stone Trees Cottage in Nova Scotia. Tiny bones have been discovered, but what are they from? As Josie searches for the answer, she is forced to cope with an accident and competition from an unpleasant neighbor. Time is of the essence, for she must find the answer before someone else does and before the tides and waves that exposed the secret wash it away forever.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Young Josie hopes to become a famous paleontologist, and finding fossil proof of a previously unknown dinosaur along the stony beaches of Nova Scotia would catapult her to fame. But her plans to spend spring vacation fossil hunting at her grandfather's beach cottage are threatened by his leg injury and bad weather, both events trapping her indoors. Another complicating element is the new boy, Lucan, who has moved into a cottage down the beach and enjoys Josie's fear of his intimidating dog Hunter. Lucan is also determined to find valuable fossils, to help pay for the care of his dog. Helmer is modestly successful in conveying Josie's awe at the dinosaurs who lived so near yet so long ago and in arousing readers' interest in paleontology, although the suspense is mild and the plot predictable. Josie eventually stands up to Lucan's threats and pursues her important discovery, and these tense encounters are the most effective scenes. Written in large typeface and broken up with illustrations, the novel is useful for independent readers ready for longer books. 2004, Orca Book Publishers, Ages 7 to 11.

Josie crouched to examine the small cave-like crevice. Suddenly her hand slipped and she found herself wrist-deep in icy water. By her feet was a small tidal pool.

Pieces of broken rock were scattered over the bottom of the pool. Her eyes were drawn to one of them. She scooped it out. What she saw made her gasp in amazed delight.

On the rock were tiny raised prints. They looked like ... Josie held her breath. But could they be? Her eyes jumped back to the crystal clear water. There were more prints on the rocky bottom of the pool.
